As a Filipino mother and dependent of an OFW in the UAE, I recently had the opportunity to experience the process of getting an exemption certificate from the POLO consulate in Dubai for the travel tax exemption for OFW dependents. I am happy to share my experience with fellow Filipinos who may be looking to do the same.

Under the Philippine Residential Decree No. 1183 and Republic Act (RA) No. 8042, the dependents of OFWs are entitled to a travel tax exemption if the dependents have been residing in the UAE continously for at least five (5) years without a gap of more than six (6) months in a year or since birth (if below fove (5) years old) and are entirely dependent on the OFW member for financial support. This includes the spouse, unmarried children under the age of 21, and parents who are traveling with the OFW or visiting them in the Philippines.

To avail of this exemption, the OFW must have an Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC) issued by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), which will serve as proof of their status as an OFW. The dependent must also present a copy of the OEC, as well as their passport and travel ticket at the airport.

Before traveling, the dependent must obtain a travel tax exemption certificate from the POLO consulate in Dubai. To do this, we had to bring the following documents to the consulate:

1. Copy of the OFW's passport with valid visa
2. Copy of the dependent's passport and visa
3. Travel itinerary or booking confirmation

The process was quite straightforward, and the staff at the POLO consulate were very helpful. We had to fill out a form and submit the necessary documents at the passport releasing section. After a few minutes, we were issued a travel tax exemption certificate.

The certificate serves as proof that the dependent is entitled to the exemption and must be presented at the Bureau of Immigration counter at the airport before departure.

I am happy to report that the process was hassle-free, and we were able to obtain the certificate with ease. This exemption is a significant relief for us as OFW dependents, as travel expenses can add up quickly, especially for those with multiple family members traveling.

As a Filipino mother and dependent of an OFW, I am grateful to the Philippine government for recognizing the sacrifices of our OFWs and their families. This exemption is a small but meaningful way to ease the financial burden on our families and show appreciation for the hard work and dedication of our OFWs.

In conclusion, I urge fellow OFW dependents in the UAE to take advantage of this exemption and obtain the necessary travel tax exemption certificate from the POLO consulate. It's a simple process that can save you a significant amount of money, and it's a small gesture from the government that goes a long way in supporting our community. Let's continue to work hard and support each other, and I am confident that better days are ahead for all of us.
